Harrows Scar Milecastle and Wall - Hadrian's Wall

Harrows Scar Milecastle and its adjoining wall occupy the eastern end of the Birdoswald landscape, overlooking the River Irthing. This stretch helps explain the frontier's development from an early turf barrier into the stone wall that survives today. The milecastle's low walls outline one of the regularly spaced small forts where soldiers controlled passage through the frontier, while the longer wall section gives the remains a clear place in the countryside. Visitors praise the peaceful setting, river views and chance to see several Roman features close together. The official Birdoswald Roman Trail includes the site, with slopes and steps on the approach from the fort. Allow about ten to fifteen minutes on foot from Birdoswald's charged car park, and keep admission to the separately ticketed fort distinct from this free outdoor visit.
