Pike Hill Signal Tower preserves a small part of the Roman frontier that existed before Hadrian's Wall. Soldiers used this high point to communicate with forts along the Stanegate, and the tower was later incorporated into the Wall at an angle to its line. Much of it was lost when a road cutting was made in the nineteenth century, but the remaining masonry and doorway still show how carefully the structure was built. Reviewers enjoy the wide views and quiet setting, with the information board helping explain why such a small ruin matters. Combine the stop with nearby Banks East Turret, which shares the visitor car park. A short footpath crosses uneven turf between the parking and tower, and steps lead up to the remains. The grass can become muddy, so sturdy footwear is useful. This is an exposed archaeological stop rather than a staffed attraction.
