Lanercost Priory combines the roofless remains of a medieval monastery with a church that is still in use. The east end of the 13th-century church survives to its full height, its tiers of arches framing the burial monuments of the Dacre family. Look for the Victorian effigy of the infant Elizabeth Dacre Howard and the vaulted spaces that became part of a Tudor mansion after the monastery's closure. Information panels explain the changing uses of the buildings, while the Dacre Tower preserves the outline of the former monastic kitchen. Dogs on leads are welcome in the EH visitor site. Reviewers value the stonework and peaceful setting, and several recommend the independently run tearoom next door as a useful stop. There are no toilets within the EH site. Expect uneven grass, slippery flagstones when wet and short flights of steps; portable ramps provide access to only part of the ruins.

Accessibility: A portable ramp crosses the step from the shop, but uneven surfaces and further steps limit access to part of the site. There are no designated accessible parking spaces and no toilets in the EH site. Dacre Hall is not always accessible; the vicarage pele tower is exterior viewing only.

EH identifies free parking at the neighbouring independently managed tearoom (driving pin). Follow any signs or customer conditions. Parking beside the church has a vehicle height restriction and an unconfirmed tariff.

This is a neighbouring independently managed facility; follow any signs or customer conditions, then walk to priory admissions. The church-centred EH coordinates are not used as the driving destination.
