Penrhyn Castle is a monumental neo-Norman castle near Bangor, built in the early 19th century for the Pennant family with wealth from Jamaican sugar plantations and Welsh slate quarries. The extravagant interior includes a one-tonne slate bed made for Queen Victoria and an outstanding collection of Old Master paintings. The castle also tells the story of the Great Strike of 1900-03 at the Penrhyn Quarry.
