Clifton Hall

Clifton Hall's surviving pele tower belonged to a substantial medieval manor house that passed to the Wybergh family in the early 15th century. The surrounding hall was eventually demolished to make way for a farmhouse, leaving this compact stone tower as a reminder of a much larger home. Its history includes occupation and plundering by Jacobite troops in December 1745, shortly before the fighting at Clifton Moor. Visitors enjoy the surviving beams, fireplaces and internal architectural details, but describe a short visit rather than an extensive castle to explore. The tower sits within a working farm and must be approached on foot from the village, across fields with tall stiles. Use the small layby opposite the church where possible and leave farm gates and tracks clear. Dogs are welcome on leads.
