About
Odda's Chapel is a rare surviving Anglo-Saxon building, erected in 1056 by Earl Odda in memory of his brother Aelfric. Hidden within a later farmhouse, its nave became a kitchen and its chancel a bedroom before the chapel was recognised again in 1865. The simple interior rewards a close look at the chancel arch, old windows and alternating long and short corner stones. Traces of the later fireplace show how completely the building's purpose changed. Visitors recommend combining the short visit with nearby St Mary's Church, which preserves further Anglo-Saxon features, while allowing for limited parking in the village. English Heritage also identifies the chapel as a stopping point on the Severn Way. Deerhurst is prone to flooding, which can close the approach lane, so check access before setting out. Only assistance dogs are admitted.
