Over Bridge carries a single stone arch across the River Severn just outside Gloucester. Designed by Thomas Telford and opened in 1830, it replaced an older bridge whose narrow openings restricted river traffic. Telford shaped the sides of the arch to improve water flow during floods, also giving the crossing its unusually broad, low appearance. The bridge once carried the main road west from the city and now forms part of the National Cycle Network. Visitors appreciate being able to examine a piece of working transport history close to the modern road junction, and suggest allowing for muddy conditions on nearby paths. Reach it using the pedestrian underpass from Horseshoe Drive, where English Heritage identifies free street parking. Wheelchair access is possible, although the slopes up from the footpath are steep and may require assistance.
