Denton Hall Turret preserves the foundations of a Roman watchtower within a surviving stretch of Hadrian's Wall in Newcastle's western suburbs. Known as turret 7b, it belonged to the frontier begun in AD 122, where small groups of soldiers could shelter, cook and keep watch between the larger milecastles. Look for the doorway and the raised platform in one corner, which supported access to an upper floor. The broad rubble core and remaining facing stones make the Wall's construction easier to understand at close quarters. Visitors often remark on the unexpected contrast between the Roman remains, neighbouring houses and busy modern road. This is a compact stop rather than a large archaeological complex. On-street parking is available nearby, but choose a lawful space on the local roads and take care around traffic when approaching the site.
