Derwentcote Steel Furnace preserves a conical industrial building from around 1730, when the Derwent Valley helped supply Britain with high-quality steel. Inside, iron bars imported from Sweden were heated with charcoal to produce blister steel, which could be worked into springs and cutting tools. The surviving furnace and archaeological remains of the wider works make it possible to picture an industrial community within today's woodland setting. Volunteer tours on selected dates open the furnace interior and explain the workers' cottages, water power and steelmaking process. Reviewers enjoy the interpretation and peaceful surroundings, but warn that postcode navigation can lead towards a private drive. Use the signed car park across the A694 and cross carefully. The woodland walk can be muddy and slippery, and the uneven grounds are unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
