Benwell Vallum Crossing is a small but distinctive Roman survival in a Newcastle housing estate: the stone causeway that carried the southern approach into the fort of Condercum. The Vallum, a ditch between two banks behind Hadrian's Wall, restricted access to the military zone, and a gateway once controlled passage across this crossing. Although the fort itself has disappeared beneath later development, the causeway preserves part of the system that organised movement around it. Visitors often remark on finding Roman remains among modern homes, but also report the locked gate. English Heritage now specifies external viewing only, so plan to look from outside the enclosure rather than enter the excavated area. The site is at the end of Denhill Park and is a short separate stop from Benwell Roman Temple nearby. Respect residents' driveways and take time to read the interpretation where visible.
From English Heritage's published calendar, updated 1 October 2026, with dates up to 16 March 2027.
