Heddon on the Wall Hadrian's Wall

Heddon-on-the-Wall preserves a consolidated stretch of the Roman frontier beside the modern village, probably completed in AD 122 or 123. The masonry reaches up to two metres in thickness, giving a useful sense of the physical barrier even though this is a short surviving section rather than a fort or museum complex. Visitors often describe it as a worthwhile brief stop, especially when following the wider story of Hadrian's Wall through Northumberland. Several point out that the entrance can be easy to miss behind the roadside hedge, so look carefully for the site rather than expecting a large visitor centre. There is no dedicated car park; English Heritage advises using suitable nearby streets. Keep local access clear and check any parking restrictions. Entry is free during daylight hours, and the village setting makes this a different experience from the wall's more remote stretches.
