Prudhoe Castle occupies a strong position above a crossing of the River Tyne, with a millpond and barbican marking the approach to its gatehouse. The surviving defences explain the strategic value of the site, while a Regency Gothic mansion within the walls reveals its later use as a gentleman's residence. Everyday visits currently centre on the outer bailey; the inner ward and gatehouse chapel open on selected volunteer days, so check the arrangements before expecting to explore them. Reviewers particularly value the imposing exterior and the contrast between the nearby town and the quiet castle setting. A route through the dry moat leads into a small wooded area, offering another perspective on the walls. Free parking is about 70 metres from the entrance, but slopes, cobbles and loose gravel affect the approach, and some areas require steps.
The grounds are open daily and free to access between 10am and 4pm. The inner ward of the castle is open on the below dates: Sunday 7 June 2026, 11am-3pm Sunday 5 July 2026, 11am-3pm Sunday 2 August 2026, 11am-3pm Sunday 6 September 2026, 11am-3pm Sunday 4 October 2026, 11am-3pm Entry is free (and no booking is required) but we do ask for donations to help us look after Prudhoe Castle and the other historic sites in our care.
Outer ward open daily 10am-4pm with free entry. The next listed inner-ward volunteer opening is Sunday 4 October 2026, 11am-3pm, free without booking. Do not assume inner-ward toilets and house facilities are available on ordinary days.
Ground-floor house access is via a ramp when open; upper floor and chapel have steep steps. Gravel, grass, slopes and small steps affect the grounds; manual wheelchair users may need assistance.

The official facilities page identifies a walk through the dry moat into a small wooded area. Access through the castle grounds; outer ward open daily 10am-4pm and entry and visitor parking are free. Some slopes and steps; dog permission was not confirmed in current official guidance.
