About
Etal Castle stands near a ford over the River Till in a Northumberland village shaped by centuries of border conflict. Robert Manners built it in the mid 14th century to defend against Scottish raiders, but James IV's invading army captured it in 1513 shortly before the Battle of Flodden. Today its surviving stonework and grassy enclosure offer a compact introduction to that unsettled history. Reviewers appreciate the information boards and often combine the ruins with a look around the village. The castle's shop and museum are now closed, so plan refreshments elsewhere and check the seasonal availability of the estate-managed toilets in the car park. Dogs on leads are welcome. The grass can be uneven and slippery, and in wet weather visitors may need to use the rear entrance when the portcullis entrance is shut.
