Fontmell and Melbury Downs

Fontmell and Melbury Downs are sweeping chalk downlands on the edge of Cranborne Chase, forming one of the finest stretches of unimproved chalk grassland in Dorset. The steep escarpment and rolling hilltops support a remarkable diversity of wildflowers, butterflies — including chalkhill blue and Adonis blue — and ground-nesting birds. Circular walks offer panoramic views across the Blackmore Vale and surrounding Dorset countryside.
