Fiddleford Manor preserves the principal rooms of a small medieval house beside the River Stour. Probably begun around 1370 for William Latimer, Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset, it has been altered repeatedly while retaining exceptional timber roofs over the great hall and solar. These roof structures are the main reason to visit, with their large timbers showing the skill and ambition of medieval carpentry. Reviewers recommend looking upwards and taking time in the few surviving public rooms, rather than expecting a furnished country-house tour. The adjoining building remains a private home and is outside the visit. A grass path connects the manor with its free car park, but it can become very muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is sensible. Take care near the unfenced river edge; refreshments and other services are available in nearby Sturminster Newton.
