Foxbury is a 150-hectare heathland restoration project on the northern edge of the New Forest near East Wellow, bought by the National Trust in 2005 after years as a commercial conifer plantation. The conifers are gradually giving way to lowland heath and native broadleaved woodland, and the site is already home to nightjars, Dartford warblers, glow worms, bats, deer, reptiles and insects, with Belted Galloway cattle and New Forest ponies grazing beneath newly exposed oaks. In summer the ground is coloured by gorse, heather, orchids and foxgloves. This is a fragile conservation site with no regular public access: it opens for special events and for educational groups by prior arrangement, when visitors explore from a basecamp along miles of all-weather gravel tracks suitable for buggies and motorised wheelchairs, with den building and bug hunting for children. One tip: access is through the Trust's Half Moon Common car park off Blackhill Road, so check event details first. Dogs on leads are usually welcome at events, with some exceptions.
