Stockbridge Marsh is common land beside the River Test on the edge of Stockbridge, a Site of Special Scientific Interest of unimproved wet grassland and fen-like vegetation. Commoners' rights have existed here since the 1300s, and local people's cattle and horses still graze the marsh. It gives access to the water's edge in a valley with little other river frontage: wild brown trout, grayling and the occasional salmon show in the clear chalk stream, and water voles and kingfishers work the banks. The Trust's Stockbridge Common Marsh wildlife walk is a flat 1.8-mile loop from the Lion's Den car park, out along the river and back by the Test Way. Dogs are welcome on a lead or under close control because livestock roam freely. Reviewers find it peaceful and rarely crowded. One tip from visitors: wear boots or wellies, as the grass paths turn wet and muddy in winter and after rain. Fishing and cycling are not permitted on the marsh.
