Dunster Gallox Bridge is a late medieval stone crossing over the River Avill, once used by packhorses bringing fleeces from Exmoor into a town enriched by the wool trade. Its name comes from 'gallows bridge', recalling an earlier association with the gallows nearby. The narrow bridge and neighbouring ford give a clear sense of a route designed long before modern traffic. Although it appears in English Heritage's directory, the bridge is managed by the National Trust and is separate from the paid visit to Dunster Castle. Combine a look at the crossing with the village's other historic buildings and market remains. English Heritage warns that the surface can become muddy and slippery; one end meets slightly uneven ground on Macmillan Way West. Public toilets and refreshments are in Dunster, with parking arrangements checked separately. Dogs on leads are welcome.
Open during reasonable daylight hours; check the official visitor page for access notices before travelling.
