CastleSomersetEnglish Heritage2.1
Daw's Castle occupies a coastal position above Watchet where a fortress founded by King Alfred helped protect the town against Viking attacks. What survives is an archaeological site in the landscape, rather than a roofed castle or a circuit of high walls. Grassy ground and fragmentary remains require some imagination, while the coastal setting explains why this position mattered. Reviewers repeatedly warn that the name can raise expectations of a more substantial building, and describe the views as an important part of the visit. Check the current walking approach before travelling: English Heritage identifies a safety closure on the England Coast Path at Cleeve Hill and directs visitors to the signed diversion from Mill Street. Use public parking in Watchet and follow signs on the ground, keeping out of the closed area. Dogs must stay on leads. Shops, food and toilets are available in the town.

Use paid public parking in Watchet, such as West Pier car park, and approach on foot. Current parking charges are not confirmed. Do not park at road barriers or drive onto closed sections.
West Pier car park is a legitimate town arrival point consistent with EH's Watchet parking advice; continue to the signed Mill Street diversion.
