Godrevy is the headland at the eastern end of St Ives Bay in Cornwall, best known for the lighthouse on its offshore island, built in 1859 and the inspiration for Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse after her childhood summers in St Ives. Three miles of sand run south towards Hayle, popular with surfers, and reviewers point to the rock pools and boulders that make the beach an adventure playground for children. The coast path loops the headland with views to Carbis Bay and St Ives, and grey seals haul out at Mutton Cove on the north side, most reliably from autumn to early spring; keep quiet, stay on the cliff top and bring binoculars. The Trust's 5-mile circular coastal walk from the Godrevy car park takes in Hell's Mouth. There is a cafe by the car park and dogs are welcome on the coast path. Tips from regulars: check the tide times, because the wide beach all but disappears at high water, and the site is exposed, so car parks can close in bad weather and the paths suit walkers rather than wheels.

5 miles (8km), moderate, 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, 12 stages. Starts at Godrevy National Trust car park, grid reference SW583423, by Godrevy Cafe and the wooden car park hut. Terrain: some narrow paths, rocky underfoot, steep climbs, may be muddy, with cliff edges and a risk of unstable cliffs and rock falls. Parking is the Trust car park, paid through JustPark on the app or on-site machines, free to National Trust members on registering; the summer parking field opens subject to weather and ground conditions. Toilets in the car park field open 10am to dusk Easter to November, limited in winter.

1 mile (1.6km) full trail or 0.25 mile (0.4km) short trail, easy, 5 to 15 minutes, 6 stages. Starts at Gwithian village bus stop, opposite the Red River Inn, grid reference SW585411, so no car or car park charge is needed; the First Kernow Atlantic Coaster route A4 serves it and the open-top Sunseeker runs between St Ives and Gwithian in summer. Terrain includes rocky paths and steep slopes. Address Gwithian, near Hayle, Cornwall TR27 5ED.
