East Pool Mine sits at the heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site near Redruth, where tin was being worked by the late 17th century. After the old shaft collapsed in 1921, the company known as EPAL sank Taylor's Shaft and built a towering granite engine house for a vast pumping engine made by Harvey and Co of Hayle, its cast-iron beam weighing over 52 tonnes. A short walk away on Agar Road, Michell's Engine House keeps the last whim, or winding engine, built in Cornwall. Visits include a guided outdoor tour, a film on Cornish mining, the Discovery Centre of mining relics and a walk through the brick flue tunnel to the foot of the EPAL chimney. Reviewers single out the knowledgeable guides. Taylor's Engine House is closed for roof repairs, and only assistance dogs are allowed. Tips: park at the far end of Morrisons car park, as visitors advise, and arrive by mid-afternoon to fit in Michell's.
