About
Grime's Graves preserves a pitted landscape of more than 430 prehistoric shafts and quarries, dug for flint around 2650 BC. The Anglo-Saxons gave the hollows their name, but their purpose was only recognised after excavation in the 19th century. Today's visit combines an exhibition with replica tools and a virtual mine tour, film projections and the chance to descend nine metres into a surviving shaft. Reviewers consistently praise the knowledgeable staff and describe going underground as the highlight. Self-guided trails across the wider landscape add context to the workings and provide space to explore above ground. Children under seven cannot enter the shaft, and the ladder descent is unsuitable for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility. Wear sensible, flat shoes and allow for the walk from the car park. Dogs on leads are permitted on site, with underground access unconfirmed.
