The Priory of Our Lady of Thetford was one of medieval East Anglia's major monasteries and the burial place of the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk. Their protection helped it survive until 1540, making it one of the last religious houses to surrender to Henry VIII's commissioners. Today the remains spread across a large open site, including the church and cloister foundations, the shell of the prior's lodging and a largely surviving 14th-century gatehouse. Reviewers appreciate the information boards and the scale of the ruins, though some areas may be fenced off.
