The water feature was added in the following century to display its owners' wealth and status, and the surviving flint walls still suggest a substantial domestic building. Recent conservation has introduced supporting stonework that helps make the former arches and piers easier to read. Visitors describe a quiet, compact stop and often notice the neighbouring church's round tower as part of the setting. The small roadside lay-by is shared with the church approach, so parking can be limited. Four steps and two kissing gates stand between the lay-by and the ruins, and the moat holds water in winter. Dogs on leads are welcome; bring any refreshments you need because there are no facilities at the castle.
