Hardy Monument

The Hardy Monument is a tall octagonal tower erected in 1844 on Black Down hill to commemorate Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy, flag captain of HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Standing at 22 metres tall on one of the highest points in south Dorset, it commands exceptional panoramic views over the coast, Portland, Chesil Beach, and the Dorset countryside. The surrounding heathland is managed for wildlife and offers bracing walks.
