Hardy's House, Max Gate

Max Gate is the Victorian house designed by Thomas Hardy himself in 1885, where he lived until his death in 1928 and wrote many of his greatest works including 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' and 'Jude the Obscure.' The modest but comfortable house reflects Hardy's architectural training and personal taste. The garden, which Hardy planted with extensive tree cover for privacy, has been replanted with species he would have known.
