Kenilworth Castle grew from a Norman stronghold into the showpiece residence Robert Dudley created to impress Elizabeth I. Its keep dates from the 1120s, and the fortress endured a prolonged siege in 1266 before its later transformation into a palace. Today, stairs and viewing platforms let visitors explore the ruins of the queen's apartments, while the recreated Elizabethan Garden recalls her visit in 1575 with a fountain, aviary and carefully arranged planting. Leicester's Gatehouse contains exhibitions, and the former stables provide a place to pause for refreshments. Next to the castle, Abbey Fields has public walks beside the brook and lake. Reviewers enjoy the scale of the ruins, the garden and the way the audio tour explains the royal connections. Allow time to explore beyond the first courtyard, and wear suitable shoes for gravel, grass and old steps. Dogs on leads are welcome. The gatehouse has a lift, but many other upper rooms are reached by spiral staircases.

Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Limited castle parking is free for EH members displaying a valid car sticker; non-members must pay. The current non-member tariff was not confirmed, so no amount is estimated.
Town-centre car parks have separate charges. Do not assume the Queen and Castle pub car park or council parking is included in EH membership.

Leicester's Gatehouse has a lift to all floors. The garden has compacted gravel and grass paths; many upper castle rooms need spiral stairs. Level access is available in the kitchen and Great Hall areas.
