CountrysidePeak District & Derbyshire4.8
Kinder, Edale and the High Peak is a vast stretch of Dark Peak moorland in National Trust care, taking in Kinder National Nature Reserve, the Vale of Edale and the Snake moors to the Derwent edges. Kinder Scout, the highest point in the Peak District, is where around 500 walkers staged the Mass Trespass of 1932 to win access to open country; restoration has since turned its bare peat back into healthy bog. From the small Mam Nick car park a stone path climbs Mam Tor, a Scheduled Monument that was a Bronze Age hilltop fortress, for views north over the Edale Valley to Kinder. Reviewers single out the ridge walk from Mam Tor on a clear day. Tips from visitors and rangers: arrive early at weekends as parking fills fast, there are no toilets, and boots and warm layers help on boggy, exposed ground. Dogs are welcome on a short lead. The Mam Tor circular walk loops 3 miles from the car park.
Open countryside, dawn to dusk.
Mam Nick car park is very small and fills quickly at weekends, bank holidays and school holidays; please do not park on verges or block access for farmers and emergency services.
No toilet facilities. Uneven surfaces, steep routes, steps and stiles; bridleways and permissive tracks are shared with horse riders, climbers and cyclists.
Open access countryside, free for everyone. Parking at Mam Nick is charged separately for non-members.
Small National Trust car park at Mam Nick; free for members
Mam Nick car park, near Mam Tor (SK1236783300), is the only National Trust car park in this area and is very small; if it is full, return at a less busy time rather than parking on verges or blocking gateways. National Trust members park free but must register; non-members pay 6 GBP for up to 4 hours or 8 GBP all day through the JustPark app (details on the machine; no location code published). The NT trail page warns that car parks fill by 9am at busy times.
