Peveril Castle stands above Castleton between the steep sides of Cave Dale and Peak Cavern Gorge. William Peverell, a trusted knight of William the Conqueror, established one of England's early stone castles here, and Henry II later added the keep that still dominates the hilltop. Inside, look for the garderobe that once emptied into the chasm below. The visitor centre has a model of the castle and displays explaining its history before you tackle the winding climb to the ruins. Dogs on leads are welcome. Reviewers consistently praise the views across the village and surrounding hills, but also describe the ascent as demanding. Use the benches along the approach to pause, and take any drinks or picnic supplies up with you. Toilets and the shop are at the visitor centre, with no facilities at the castle itself. The hilltop site is unsuitable for wheelchairs, although the visitor centre has a lift to its exhibition.
