King Alfred's Tower

King Alfred's Tower is a 160-foot triangular brick folly on the Stourhead estate, designed by Henry Flitcroft and completed in 1772 to commemorate King Alfred the Great's rallying of the Saxons against the Danes in 878 AD. The tower stands at the point where the counties of Wiltshire, Somerset and Dorset meet, and climbing its 205 steps rewards visitors with views extending across three counties. It marks the spot where Alfred is said to have raised his standard before the Battle of Edington.
