Bratton Camp and White Horse

Bratton Camp occupies the chalk ridge above Westbury, where Iron Age earthworks enclose the site of a settlement that once held roundhouses, granaries and workshops. A much older Neolithic long barrow shows that people were using this hill thousands of years before the fort was built. Below the ridge, the White Horse has become one of Wiltshire's most recognisable landmarks, with local records suggesting an original figure was cut in the late 17th century. From the top, the attraction is as much the broad countryside view as the surviving defences, and visitors often stop for a picnic or to watch the changing light across the hills. The chalk grassland supports wildflowers and butterflies, so keep to established access and take care on the steep slopes. The hilltop car park is reached by narrow lanes with passing places. Dogs must stay on leads because sheep graze here and may be out of sight.
