About
Nunney Castle rises from a close-fitting moat in the middle of its Somerset village. Sir John de la Mare built it in the 1370s as royal favour increased his standing, creating a great tower with four round corner towers joined by high walls. Later owners modernised the building before Parliamentarian forces besieged and damaged it during the Civil War in 1645. The compact arrangement is still easy to appreciate from the outside, with the water emphasising the height and shape of the surviving stonework. Visitors particularly enjoy the view across the moat and the surrounding village, often combining a short stop with refreshments nearby. Current access is exterior viewing only from outside the moat, so do not expect to cross into the castle. The free car park off Castle Hill involves a walk down a moderate slope. Dogs on leads are welcome.
