About
Farleigh Hungerford Castle began as Sir Thomas Hungerford's fortified mansion in the 1370s and grew under his son Walter into a substantial family residence. Two corner towers survive from the castle, but the most revealing parts of a visit are the complete chapel and the Priest's House. Inside the chapel are family monuments and medieval wall paintings, while the crypt holds lead coffins, some bearing moulded faces. Displays and an audio tour explain the Hungerfords' lives and the changing fortunes of their home. Reviewers repeatedly recommend the audio guide for adding context to the ruins. The lawns and walled garden provide picnic space, with snacks and drinks available from the shop and vending machine. Dogs are allowed on leads in the grounds only. Expect uneven paths and steps; wheelchair access is limited to the upper lawns.

Standard admission is free for English Heritage members. National Trust membership alone does not grant free entry. Parking and special events are separate.
Accessibility: Wheelchair access is confined to the top lawns; no wheelchair access inside the chapel or Priest's House. Expect steps, rough paths and cobbles.
