About
Orford Castle's many-sided keep was built by Henry II to assert royal authority on the Suffolk coast, where powerful local families and a useful harbour made this more than a remote outpost. Its surviving rooms take you from the basement through kitchens, chambers and a chapel to a rooftop overlooking Orford Ness and the sea. The yellow-ochre lime coating is part of the castle's conservation, protecting stone that has been crumbling for centuries. Inside, a model explains the lost outer defences, while the Orford Museum Trust displays local finds in the upper hall. Visitors particularly value the multimedia guide for making sense of the rooms and the legend of the Wild Man of Orford. Expect 91 steep steps to the top, with no lift or toilets on site, so plan a stop in the village. Dogs are welcome on leads.
