Orford Ness

Orford Ness is Europe's largest vegetated shingle spit, a wild and hauntingly beautiful landscape stretching along the Suffolk coast. This remote peninsula has a remarkable secret history as a military test site where radar, atomic weapons triggers and other Cold War technologies were developed behind closed doors. Now returned to nature, the Ness is home to rare shingle plants, breeding birds and the eerie remains of the pagoda-shaped test buildings.
