Speke Hall is one of the finest Tudor timber-framed houses in England, built by the Catholic Norris family from 1530 around a courtyard shaded by two old yews called Adam and Eve. A priest hole and an eavesdrop by the door recall its years of sheltering priests; the Victorian interiors come from the Watt family, who restored it before it came to the National Trust in the 1940s. The setting is the surprise: the estate sits on the Mersey beside Liverpool John Lennon Airport, so plane spotting comes free with the woodland walks, and a signposted path leads through the Speke Garston Coastal Reserve along the old runway to the shore. Families get a maze, a zip line, play areas and a woodland trail; reviewers praise the knowledgeable house guides and the cafe. Tips from visitors: dogs on leads are welcome in most of the grounds, expect a queue on busy event days, and the 500 bus from Lime Street stops a mile from the entrance.

Entry is free for National Trust members, Neighbourhood and Community Pass holders and under 5s. Please note, under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. You don't need to pre-book your visit to Speke Hall. The garden, estate, restaurant and play areas are open every day. Varied terrain over gravel paths, grassed paths around fields and uneven woodland paths; not fully accessible. Large free car park, but the trail page notes that using the toilets or eating facilities before the walk requires paying admission or scanning a membership card for entry to Speke Hall.

Mostly flat level paths with large sections through woodland where pathways may be uneven and muddy. Large free car park at Speke Hall; cycle racks available.
