Strumble Head to Cardigan is the most rugged and remote stretch of the Pembrokeshire coast in National Trust care, running from the peak of Garn Fawr near Strumble Head to the cliffs of Pen yr Afr, linked throughout by the coast path. The natural starting point is the small car park below Garn Fawr, a mound of hard volcanic rock left standing as softer rock eroded away. A short, steep climb passes the ramparts of an Iron Age fort to the summit, where a First World War lookout still carries names carved into its concrete, and choughs live on the clifftops. Further east, Pen Anglas and Dinas Island guard Fishguard Harbour. Reviewers single out the views from the rocky top. Tips from visitors: the path up is easy, but the final scramble to the trig point is trickier, and there are no facilities. Dogs are welcome, on leads where cattle and ponies graze. The Garn Fawr viewpoint walk is a one-mile circuit from the car park.
Open countryside and coast path, dawn to dusk.
Coastal path with uneven ground, steep gradients and stiles, muddy in the wet; unsuitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. No facilities.
Much of the coast path is unfenced with sheer cliffs. Seals and pups use the beaches from late summer to mid November; keep at least 20 metres away.
Open coast and countryside, free for everyone. Parking arrangements are separate and their charges are not stated.
The Trust's page does not say how parking is charged.
There is no National Trust car park listed on the place page. The Garn Fawr viewpoint walk starts from the small car park at Garn Fawr (SM8989438830), 0.25 miles along the lane signposted Strumble Head; its charges, if any, are not stated. Other NT trails start from Pwllgwaelod (not National Trust) and the free public car park at Harbour Village, Goodwick.
Driving pin: the Garn Fawr car park, the start of NT's Garn Fawr viewpoint walk, matched to the Google parking listing 'Garn Fawr Carpark', 42 m from NT's 10-figure grid reference.
