The National Trust cares for 827 hectares of chalk downland surrounding Stonehenge, the most famous prehistoric monument in Europe. The landscape contains hundreds of archaeological features including burial mounds, cursus monuments and the Avenue processional route. While English Heritage manages the stone circle itself, the Trust's surrounding landscape allows visitors to walk freely across the ancient ceremonial terrain.
