Waverley Abbey

Waverley Abbey was founded in 1128 by monks from France, becoming the first Cistercian monastery in Britain and a starting point for the order's expansion across southern England. Its ruins stand beside the River Wey, where the surviving vaulted dining hall for the lay brothers gives a particularly clear impression of the buildings that once served the community. An ancient yew grows among the remains, adding another layer of history to a site later used as a setting for films including Elizabeth and Into the Woods. Visitors value the quiet atmosphere and the chance to explore the stonework without an admission charge. Reaching the ruins involves crossing about 350 metres of uneven turf from the small car park and passing through a kissing gate, so sturdy footwear is useful after rain. Dogs are welcome on leads, with particular care needed around grazing cattle and wildlife. The neighbouring house and cafe are separately managed.
