About
Waverley Abbey was founded in 1128 by monks from France, becoming the first Cistercian monastery in Britain and a starting point for the order's expansion across southern England. Its ruins stand beside the River Wey, where the surviving vaulted dining hall for the lay brothers gives a particularly clear impression of the buildings that once served the community. An ancient yew grows among the remains, adding another layer of history to a site later used as a setting for films including Elizabeth and Into the Woods.
