Winshields Wall - Hadrian's Wall

Winshields Wall follows the highest part of Hadrian's Wall, where the surviving frontier crosses exposed upland country west of Once Brewed. Here the setting is as important as the masonry: the slopes and long views help explain how the Romans used the landscape when placing their northern barrier. The visit involves reaching the ridge on foot and taking time to follow the line of the wall across uneven ground. This is an outdoor archaeological stop with no indoor shelter at the remains, so choose footwear and clothing for the weather rather than for a short roadside visit. English Heritage specifically warns that the approach becomes muddy in wet and wintry conditions. Its directions recommend parking at the National Park visitor centre in Once Brewed, now The Sill, where parking charges are separate from the free wall access.
