Sewingshields Wall - Hadrian's Wall

Sewingshields Wall follows the crest of the Great Whin Sill, where Roman builders used a rocky ridge to strengthen the frontier's defences. Conserved stretches of Hadrian's Wall, a milecastle and two turrets survive across roughly a mile of this landscape. The milecastle sits close to the crag edge and was later occupied by a medieval farm, adding another chapter to the frontier's long history. Reviewers particularly value the broad views and sense of space, but emphasise the need for good footwear, water and something to eat. Reach the remains by following the National Trail east from Housesteads, using its separately charged car park. This is an exposed walk across crags, with steep sections and ground that can become muddy or slippery. Allow time for the return journey and carry a layer for the wind.
