Attingham Park

Attingham Park was commissioned in 1782 by Noel Hill, 1st Lord Berwick, and its Regency mansion, with a picture gallery designed by John Nash, tells a story of changing fortunes, neglect and revival, with conservation work still visible inside. Outside, the parkland along the River Tern was shaped by Humphry Repton, and the deer park created in 1798 by the 2nd Lord Berwick still holds descendants of the original fallow herd, grazing unfenced among ancient trees. The huge organic walled garden holds a National Collection of camassia flowering in May; the Mile Walk loops the pleasure grounds; and the Field of Play gives children space to run and tunnels to crawl through. Reviewers love the free-ranging deer, the miles of level paths suited to wheelchairs and the cafe near the entrance. Tips from visitors: dogs are welcome on leads, so keep them close around the deer; the extra bookable house tours are worth it but allow no photos; and the overflow field gives you more room to park.
