Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is Britain's largest gorge, a dramatic limestone ravine carved through the Mendip Hills by glacial meltwater during successive ice ages. The National Trust protects the southern cliffs and surrounding grassland, where rare plants including Cheddar pink grow on the limestone crags. The gorge's cliffs rise to nearly 140 metres and the area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its geology and ecology.
