Sand Point is a narrow headland running out into the Bristol Channel like a natural pier, just north of Weston-super-Mare, with views across Sand Bay that make it a favourite picnic spot. It and neighbouring Middle Hope are believed to have once been an island, reached across the mud flats at low tide, and two Iron Age settlements have been found here; much later the headland was used to test weapons during the Second World War. Nearby stands Woodspring Priory, begun in 1230 on the site of a chapel founded by one of the murderers of Thomas Becket. St Thomas's Head, a former MOD base, is now a nature reserve, and curlews and oystercatchers work the mud at low tide. Reviewers describe a wild, windswept walk with sea on all sides, rocky and uneven underfoot. Two tips: wear sturdy shoes, and check the tide times, as the mud flats are dangerous. Dogs are welcome on leads at all times.
Open coastal headland; the NT page publishes no opening calendar or set hours for Sand Point.
No toilets at the NT car park; public toilets are in the car park on Sand Road.
Check tide times before visiting: the beach is sand and mud flats exposed at low tide, and it can be dangerous to walk too far out.
Please do not light fires or barbecues.
