Great Chalfield Manor

Great Chalfield Manor is a moated 15th-century manor house near Melksham, one of the finest examples of late medieval domestic architecture in England. The house was built around 1480 by Thomas Tropenell, a wealthy cloth merchant, and features an impressive great hall with an oriel window, a screens passage and a remarkable set of peeping masks through which the lord could observe his guests. The Arts and Crafts garden, created by Major Robert Fuller in the early 20th century, complements the medieval architecture with rose gardens, topiary and a gazebo overlooking the moat.
