Hardy's Cottage is the small cob and thatch cottage in Higher Bockhampton where the novelist and poet Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 and wrote his early novels including 'Under the Greenwood Tree' and 'Far from the Madding Crowd.' The cottage was built by Hardy's great-grandfather and retains its modest rural character. The surrounding woodland and heath inspired many settings in Hardy's Wessex novels.
