Moreton Corbet Castle

Moreton Corbet Castle brings together a medieval stronghold and the remains of an ambitious Elizabethan country house. Its earliest surviving stonework dates from around 1200, including a gatehouse that reveals the defensive origins of the site. The Corbet family remodelled the castle in the 16th century, adding a south wing whose Italian-inspired design was unusual in England. Civil War damage left the contrasting buildings as the ruins seen today. Look closely at the ornate openings and carved details, then compare them with the heavier medieval walls; the neighbouring church also contains Corbet family monuments. Reviewers particularly enjoy the contrast between the two periods and the peaceful rural setting. Parking is limited to a few spaces beside the entrance, and there are no toilets. Most areas can be reached by wheelchair, but short stairways and a hidden drop require care. Dogs on leads are welcome.
