Wenlock Priory

Wenlock Priory's ruins stand at the edge of Much Wenlock, on a site whose monastic history began around AD 680. An Anglo-Saxon religious community was later replaced by a Cluniac priory, and the surviving buildings reflect that order's taste for elaborate decoration. The chapter house is the highlight, with interlocking round arches carried on carved columns, while tall portions of the 13th-century church rise above the grounds. Topiary planted as part of an Edwardian garden adds a distinctive later layer to the setting. Bring a picnic for the grounds, and cross the small road carefully from the car park; ramps, compacted gravel paths and lawns provide access around the priory.
