Buildwas Abbey stands among trees beside the River Severn, preserving a remarkably little-altered 12th-century Cistercian church and a vaulted chapter house with its tiled floor. The surviving arches and decorative stonework make it possible to picture the monastery's principal spaces without the later rebuilding seen at many other abbeys. Reviewers particularly appreciate the calm setting, often describing a quiet visit with time to explore at their own pace. A volunteer-run second-hand bookshop helps support work at the site and is worth looking into when open. Bring a picnic if you want to stay longer, as the nearest public toilets and a wider choice of refreshments are in Ironbridge. Steps lead from the car park, with an alternative ramp over grass, and surfaces may be slippery after rain. Dogs on leads are welcome, with owners asked to take waste away.

Open 10am-5pm April-October and 10am-4pm November-March. Closed 24, 25, 26 and 31 December. Bookshop usually Friday-Tuesday 11am-3pm, subject to volunteers.
Steps from the car park with an alternative ramp via grass. Mainly level ground, low walls and unguarded drops; grass and steps may be slippery when wet.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome; clear up after them and take waste away.
