Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron

Set in the Coalbrookdale Company's vast Great Warehouse beneath its landmark clock tower, this museum explains how a quiet Shropshire valley became the crucible of the Industrial Revolution after Abraham Darby I worked out how to smelt iron with coke in 1709. Two floors trace the rise of a firm whose castings, from humble cooking pots to grand ornamental pieces, travelled the world, interwoven with the story of the Quaker Darby dynasty; a detailed scale model of the Iron Bridge is a highlight. The museum joined the National Trust with the 2026 Ironbridge transfer, and the Old Furnace where Darby made his breakthrough is nearby, currently closed for conservation. Dogs on short leads are welcome outside, but only assistance dogs may enter the museum. Visitors note the displays are rich in reading and suit adults and older children best, though a picture-spotting trail keeps younger ones hunting; the Furnace Kitchen serves food daily, and the short walk up to Abraham Darby's grave makes a thoughtful postscript.
